Ditching Lastpass for Bitwarden

I have been a user of Lastpass for over 5 years. With the new change coming in this month of choosing a device type and sticking to that only, I’ve started to look for an alternative.

Their new change really throws a spanner in the works as I frequently use both the Android App (type mobile), and the Chrome extension (type computer) – now I could pay the circa £32 p/year, but I really don’t want to. I’d be more inclined if it was some smaller company, but given Lastpass is part of LogMeIn who had a revenue of $1.2bn in 2019, they really do not need my money. Frankly, for making such a basic feature ‘premium’ – and killing the free tier, they can go swivel.

One of the alternatives I looked at was Bitwarden the opensource appeals to me, just because any other password manager’s code is closed source and internally reviewed doesn’t mean it’s any more secure. Remember, with it being opensource code it allows a better overview of its code by other developers. Bitwarden also offers 256-bit AES end-to-end encryption, and the ability to self-host if I was feeling extra paranoid. So it is definitely secure enough.

Importing my data into Bitwarden from Lastpass was a doddle. It even retained my groups and such. The mobile app, Chrome extension, and browser version all seem fine too – and it supports 2FA via an authenticator.

Now to clean up these passwords and group them properly…
It’s going to be painstaking to try each credential to see if it still works, or if I want to close the said account.

Likewise, it is a little annoying I have 3 separate logins for Amazon with the same email (Shopping, Alexa SDK, AWS)

Maybe I could go for the Kondo approach, if the password or service doesn’t spark joy, bin it.

Bye Lastpass x
